Murray Stahl (1953-2026)
Murray Stahl (1953-2026) co-founded the Firm in 1994. He served as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Horizon Kinetics Holding Corporation (OTC: HKHC), the parent company of Horizon Kinetics Asset Management LLC, where he was also Chief Investment Officer. His leadership and investment insight were instrumental in shaping the Firm’s philosophy and long-term success, and his vision and legacy continue to guide the Firm today. Murray was the Chief Executive Officer of FRMO Corp (OTC: FRMO) and President, Chief Executive Officer, and Co-Portfolio Manager of the RENN Fund, Inc. (NYSE: RCG). He served on the Board of Directors of Texas Pacific Land Corporation (NYSE: TPL) and Miami International Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: MIAX), and was a managing member of MSRH, LLC. Prior to co-founding the Firm, Murray spent 16 years at Bankers Trust Company (1978-1994) as a senior portfolio manager and research analyst, where he was responsible for investing the Utility Mutual Fund, along with three of the bank’s Common Trust Funds: The Special Opportunity Fund, The Utility Fund, and The Tangible Assets Fund. He was also a member of the Equity Strategy Group and the Investment Strategy Group, which established asset allocation guidelines for the Private Bank. Murray received a Bachelor of Arts in 1976, a Master of Arts in 1980 from Brooklyn College, and an MBA from Pace University in 1985.
